EC Sense TB200B / Industrial Safety Gas Sensor Modules

TB200B Industrial Safety Gas Sensor Modules

Industrial safety sensor modules covering 23 gas types across 136 models. A 40 × 30 mm board on a 100 mm four-pin cable lets the sensing head reach into a cabinet or a corner of a pipe rack while the host controller stays where it is. Solid-polymer electrochemical technology, factory-calibrated against the matching gas with the calibration data stored in flash; three cell options (ES1, ES4, EC4), and both UART (TTL 3.3 V) and I²C versions report concentration digitally alongside ambient temperature and humidity. Supply is 3.3 – 5.5 V DC at 40 mW, 0.8 mA in sleep, operating from -40 °C to +55 °C, with an expected lifetime beyond 5 years for the ES1/ES4 versions.

Why Buy a TB200B Module Instead of Wiring a Bare Cell Yourself?

A bare cell outputs a tiny analog current. Turning that into a concentration value a PLC or gateway can use means building your own amplifier, temperature and humidity compensation, ADC stage and calibration rig, then writing firmware and a protocol. The TB200B packs that entire chain onto one 40 × 30 mm board: the sensing head sits at the end of a cable, the value comes straight out over UART or I²C, and ambient temperature and humidity come with it.

Why Buy a TB200B Module Instead of Wiring a Bare Cell Yourself?
Aspect Bare Sensor CellTB200B Sensor Module
Output Signal Microamp-level analog current, unreadable without external circuitryUART (TTL 3.3 V) or I²C digital signal reporting concentration directly
Calibration Build your own rig and gas-calibrate every unitProfessionally calibrated against the matching gas at the factory, data stored in flash
Temperature & Humidity None — add your own sensor and compensation logicOn-board temp/RH sensor (-20 °C to +70 °C, ±0.2 °C; 0 – 100% RH, ±2%)
Freedom in Probe Placement Soldered to the board — gas must reach the board face100 mm four-pin cable: the head reaches into cabinets, pipe racks or ducts, with custom lengths available
External Circuitry & Firmware Custom amplifier, compensation, sampling and protocol firmwareNone — power and one communication line are enough
Best For High-volume instrument makers with in-house calibration and circuit designIntegrators and equipment builders who need to ship on a project schedule, especially where the head must sit away from the controller

Selection Guide

Five Steps to the Right Model

The TB200B spans 23 gas types and 136 models, and most gases come in several ranges with two cell options and two interfaces. Work through the sequence below and the choice usually narrows to one or two models.

  1. Step 1 — Identify the target gas and the background gases

Decide what you are measuring, then what else is present on site. Background gases drive interference risk — and decide whether a different principle is needed: if you are measuring VOCs alongside high CO or NO₂, metal-oxide approaches are largely ruled out. Our electrochemical sensors optimise electrode chemistry and bias per target gas, and cross-sensitivity data is published in each model's datasheet for checking item by item.

  2. Step 2 — Size the range from your alarm setpoint

The usual mistake is buying the widest range available — a wider range means coarser resolution. A practical rule: pick a range two to five times your alarm setpoint. For H₂S, where occupational limits sit around 10 ppm, a 0 – 100 ppm model is enough; you do not need 0 – 5000 ppm. Every range for every gas appears in the matrix below, with resolution down to 0.001 ppm.

  3. Step 3 — Choose the cell: ES1, ES4 or EC4

This is the step that sets module height and service life. The ES1 version is 12 mm tall overall and weighs under 15 g; the ES4 version is 22.45 mm tall and under 25 g. Both use solid-polymer electrochemistry with an expected lifetime beyond 5 years and 1% repeatability. The EC4 version is also 22.45 mm tall but uses liquid electrochemistry, aimed specifically at corrosive gases such as bromine, fluorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride, with an expected lifetime beyond 2 years and 2% repeatability. Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ammonia and ozone are offered in both ES1/ES4 and EC4 versions, so you can trade off site concentration against replacement interval.

  4. Step 4 — Pick the interface: UART or I²C

The same gas and range normally come in both a UART and an I²C order number; only the communication method and pinout differ. The UART version runs 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, on four wires: VCC (red), GND (black), RX (yellow), TX (green). The I²C version runs at up to 20 kHz with 3.3 V signalling on VCC (red), GND (black), SDA (yellow), SCL (green). I²C suits several modules on one bus provided addresses are planned; UART point-to-point is simpler for one or a few heads.

  5. Step 5 — Check supply, fit, environment and compliance

Supply is 3.3 – 5.5 V DC (5 V recommended) with under 5 mA working current and 40 mW at 5 V; peak current is 3.8 mA for the UART version and 6.2 mA for I²C, with 0.8 / 0.9 mA in sleep. The board itself measures 40 × 30 × 5.6 mm without the sensor and ships with a 100 mm four-pin cable. Confirm the site stays within -40 °C to +55 °C, 15 – 95% RH non-condensing and atmospheric pressure ±10%, and whether your project needs RoHS or similar documents — certification status is stated in each model's datasheet, and we can supply the reports we hold. Warranty is 12 months from the date of shipment.

Choose the Cell First: ES1 vs ES4 vs EC4

For the same gas and range, changing the cell changes module height, service life and repeatability. The table below sets the three options side by side from the official datasheets — check for corrosive gases first, then installation space, then replacement interval.

Choose the Cell First: ES1 vs ES4 vs EC4
Specification ES1 CellES4 CellEC4 Cell
Sensing Principle Solid-polymer electrochemicalSolid-polymer electrochemicalLiquid electrochemical

Repeatability 1%1%2%
Gas Coverage Mainstream industrial and environmental gases, with the widest range of spansThe same gas list and spans as ES1Bromine, fluorine, HCl, HF; chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ammonia and ozone also come in EC4 versions
Typical Applications Compact control cabinets, transmitters and multi-gas probesFixed points in pipe racks, trenches and plant rooms where normal life is expectedCorrosive-gas environments in chemical, plating and water-treatment plants

Figures are taken from the official datasheets (TB200B-ES1&ES4 and TB200B-EC4 series, V3.0). ES1, ES4 and EC4 modules share the same outline, interface and cable definition; the differences lie in the cell and the resulting service life. The EC4 version tolerates long exposure to corrosive gases, but its life and repeatability are lower than the solid-polymer cells — factor the replacement interval into the choice.

TB200B or TB600B&C — Which One?

Both series are EC Sense solid-polymer electrochemical modules, both report gas plus temperature and humidity, and both use the same four-wire colour code. Two practical questions decide it: do you need a smaller board, and will the site involve gases such as oxygen, halogens or hydrogen halides?

40 × 30 mm board · 4-pin cable · 23 gas types

TB200B Industrial Safety Module

  • 23 gas types across 136 models — six more than the TB600B&C: oxygen, bromine, chlorine dioxide, fluorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride
  • ES1, ES4 and EC4 cell options, swappable per gas
  • 40 × 30 × 5.6 mm board on a 100 mm four-pin cable, letting the head sit away from the controller
  • 40 mW at 5 V, 0.8 mA in sleep (UART version); 3.3 – 5.5 V DC supply

Best for: dusty or damp sites where the head must reach inside cabinets and pipe racks; corrosive gases such as chlorine, bromine, fluorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride; oxygen monitoring; and projects needing custom cable lengths.

Smaller board · Lower power · 19 gas types

TB600B&C Detection Module

  • 19 gas types across 108 order numbers (split evenly between UART and I²C), including a smoke channel
  • 23 × 25.5 × 4.85 mm without the sensor and 3.1 g — less than half the footprint of the TB200B
  • 12.5 mW at 5 V and 4 mW in sleep (UART version) — far lower than the TB200B
  • Also carries on-board temp/RH sensing and factory calibration, with the same four-wire colour code and cable definition

Best for: space-constrained, power-sensitive portable and battery-powered devices, and projects that need only mainstream industrial toxic gases without oxygen or halogen channels.

Both series report concentration directly, so the choice comes down to board size, power budget and the gas list. If you are unsure, send us the application — we will tell you which series fits, including when neither does and a different principle is the better answer (for %LEL alarms, for instance, catalytic bead or infrared).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose between the TB200B and the TB600B&C?

Three things decide it. Board size: the TB600B&C is 23 × 25.5 mm and 3.1 g, while the TB200B is a 40 × 30 mm board weighing under 15 g in its ES1 version — go TB600B&C when space is tight. Power: the TB600B&C draws 12.5 mW at 5 V and 4 mW in sleep, against 40 mW and 0.8 mA for the TB200B — favour the TB600B&C on battery power. Gas list: the TB200B adds oxygen, bromine, chlorine dioxide, fluorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride, and offers ES1/ES4/EC4 cell options per gas, while the TB600B&C uniquely covers smoke. Choose the TB200B for those gases, or when a 100 mm cable needs to reach inside a cabinet.

What is the difference between the ES1, ES4 and EC4 cells?

Both the ES1 and ES4 are solid-polymer electrochemical cells with a lifetime beyond 5 years and 1% repeatability; they differ mainly in overall height and weight — 12 mm and under 15 g for ES1, 22.45 mm and under 25 g for ES4. The EC4 is a liquid-electrochemical cell, also 22.45 mm tall, with a lifetime beyond 2 years and 2% repeatability, intended for corrosive gases such as bromine, fluorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride. Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ammonia and ozone come in both ES1/ES4 and EC4 versions. The sequence is: check for corrosive gases first, then installation space, then weigh replacement interval against service life.

Do I need to calibrate it myself?

No. Every module is professionally calibrated with the matching gas before shipment and the calibration data is stored in a flash chip, so it reports a usable concentration as soon as it powers up — no secondary gas calibration. If you have your own calibration workflow, you can recalibrate with your own standard gas and write the result back.

Can it measure combustible gas and drive a %LEL alarm?

No, and this point matters. The TB200B is a ppm-level toxic and harmful gas module: it measures leakage in ppm for gases such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide (CO spans 0 – 10 ppm up to 0 – 10,000 ppm and 0 – 2% vol), but its spans and resolution are designed around occupational exposure limits and leak detection, not %LEL alarms. For %LEL combustible-gas alarms, choose a catalytic bead or infrared sensor.

Which interfaces are supported, and how do I choose between UART and I²C?

The same gas and range usually carry both a UART and an I²C order number with identical performance — only the communication method differs. The UART version is 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, wired VCC (red), GND (black), RX (yellow), TX (green). The I²C version runs at up to 20 kHz with 3.3 V signalling, wired VCC (red), GND (black), SDA (yellow), SCL (green). Use I²C when several modules share one bus (plan the addresses) and UART for simpler single or few-head setups.

How much power does it draw? Can it run on batteries?

Supply is 3.3 – 5.5 V DC (5 V recommended) with under 5 mA working current and 40 mW at 5 V; peak current is 3.8 mA for the UART version and 6.2 mA for I²C, with 0.8 mA (UART) / 0.9 mA (I²C) in sleep. The sleep mode makes battery and IoT-node power feasible; if the power budget is very tight, compare against the TB600B&C (12.5 mW at 5 V, 4 mW in sleep).

What are the operating limits and how long does it last?

Operating temperature is -40 °C to +55 °C, humidity 15 – 95% RH (non-condensing) and pressure atmospheric ±10%. Accuracy is ±5% of the measured value, repeatability 1% (2% for the EC4 version), output is linear, long-term drift is under 5% per year and there is no noticeable zero-line drift. Expected lifetime exceeds 5 years for ES1/ES4 and 2 years for EC4, with a 12-month warranty from the date of shipment. The on-board temperature and humidity sensor covers -20 °C to +70 °C (±0.2 °C) and 0 – 100% RH (±2%).
